Weekend Arts Roundup: from Shere Khan to Skriker
Halfway through...well, technically only through the first half of the semester, but who's counting, right? With only three weeks left til spring break, these events will help you enjoy the unseasonably warm weekend to its fullest:
- Molly Silberberg's senior thesis production of Caryl Churchill's The Skriker, starring Bethy Atkins '11 and Nushelle De Silva '11, has gotten great buzz in Town Topics and The Prince this week--try to catch it this weekend before it closes on Saturday night! If you need any more encouragement, its version of the underworld includes Nushelle in a red clown wig that's actually this big. How are you not out the door already? Thursday-Saturday at 8pm in the Matthews Acting Studio at 185 Nassau Street; students tickets $10, events eligible.
- Need to get your Anglophilic faux-Brit on? The Tigerlilies are throwing a free concert with All the King's Men, an all-male a cappella group from King's College London, tonight at 9pm in Rocky Common Room. Sexy British guys singing love songs...irresistible, no? Free.
Sophomore Sarah Hedgecock's production of Recent Tragic Events, up at Theatre Intime this weekend and next, ruminates on the post-9/11 world with help from a sock puppet of Joyce Carol Oates. Case closed. Thursday-Saturday at 8pm, or catch it next weekend. Student tickets $8, events eligible.
- If you only go to one dance event this year, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than the Lewis Center's Spring Dance Festival, which plays for one weekend only in McCarter's Berlind Theater. It includes over fifty students in dances choreographed by seasoned pros and undergraduates alike--tickets sell out fast for the 4 performances, so buy yours now in Frist. Insider's tip: if Frist runs out, there are sometimes extra tickets at the Berlind, so try them at 609.258.2787. Tickets $10, student events eligible. Friday at 8pm; Saturday at 2pm and 8pm; Sunday at 1 pm.
- Shere Khan a cappella has its album release concert in Richardson Auditorium at 8pm this Saturday night. This album marks over three years of diligent musical arrangement and rehearsals for the group--and if you need further confirmation that these dudes aren't playing around, their badass album trailer should silence any doubts. Saturday at 8pm; student tickets $8, events eligible.
- Did Narek Hakhnazaryan's stellar performance on campus last weekend whet your appetite for free classical music? Check out Meghan Todt's senior violin recital at Taplin Auditorium (in Fine Hall) this Saturday at 8pm. Todt, who studied violin at Royal College of Music in Princeton's competitive music-exchange program, is definitely a must-see. Free.
