TEDx at Princeton!
That's right, TED is coming to Princeton. Nerds, get ready to salivate. For those of you who don't know what TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is, the nonprofit was founded in 1984 to bring people together to share ideas. Basically, they host talks by people with really cool ideas that might change the world. The annual TED conference, held every spring in Long Beach, California, is the main attraction. The annual TEDGlobal Conference, which is held ever summer in Oxford, England, began in 2005.Here's one of my fave TEDtalks from this summer's Global Conference. Eben Bayer explains how his company makes biodegradable "plastic" from mushrooms. But wait, you ask, what about Princeton? TEDx is an offshoot of TED at the local level. And TEDxPrincetonU is happening December 3. Details after the jump. Now, of course, this is Princeton. So the theme, "Invention2Venture," is about creating change profitably. As the facebook page says:
"TEDxPrincetonU hopes to catalyze entrepreneurial conversation with an emphasis on social change. The conference hopes to spark a deeper interest and understanding in social entrepreneurship; taking an academic idea and transforming it into something more meaningful that can affect change as a venture."
But there are going to be some really cool people there. Sam Cochran created a solar energy system that mimics ivy attached to buildings. Nicholas Negroponte is the founder of One Laptop Per Child, which aims to facilitate education of children in developing countries by providing laptops. Lauren Bush '06 founded FEED Projects, which sells eco-friendly FEED bags to raise money for the World Food Programme, which aims to alleviate worldwide hunger. The list goes on.There will be two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, but only 75 Princeton students get to attend each session, which will be held in the Frist Performance Theater. Sign up here by November 21.
