Weekend Arts Roundup: Spooky Songs, Killer Acoustics, and more
Looking for some prime distractions from the mid-semester crunch? Take this chance to see one of Princeton's undergraduate choirs, the Chapel Choir and the Glee Club, in some truly innovative performances. If you're in the mood for atmospheric October spookiness, tomorrow's Chapel Choir concert in the University Chapel is just the thing: choir members will provide the accompaniment for Lon Chaney's cult classic silent film, "Phantom of the Opera," with the help of organist Michael Britt. Expect ghoulish masks, cheesy thrills, and a great turnout--this annual show (they do a different silent film each October) is a huge hit with the locals. 9pm: Student tickets are $2 at the door or in Frist. If modern architecture's more your thing, don't miss the Glee Club's concert tomorrow night at 8pm in the new Frick Chemistry Building. The Club is singing a concert of complex, eight-part pieces from the rafters of Frick as part of the building's ongoing dedication events. As Glee Club member Matt Prast, a junior, described, "We're literally singing on clear glass bridges 10 feet up in the air, performing to the audience from all sides while our conductor stands on a balcony in front of us. It's a really resonant space--it's going to be incredible." Admission is free. Also up this weekend:
- Margaret White '11's senior thesis production for her Theater certificate, [title of show], opens in Matthews Acting Studio tomorrow night. Because of an upcoming professional production at New Brunswick's George Street Theater, publicity's had to be pretty minimal (check out their clever Facebook campaign here), but the show's been getting great word of mouth. The show runs October 15, 16, and 21-23 at 8pm; student tickets are $8.
- Up at the Garden Theatre this weekend is The Social Network, which has been getting its fair share of Citizen Kane-worthy critical praise over the past couple weeks. Thursday-Saturday @11:30pm; free admission, with free popcorn and soda.
- Center Stage Film presents the summer's sleeper hit, The Kids Are Alright, at 10pm on Friday in Frist's Film & Performance Theatre (on the third floor). Free Admission.
- The University Concert Jazz Ensemble presents its first fall concert on Saturday night at 8pm in Richardson Auditorium, featuring Brazilian singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil. Student tickets $5.
