Medical Bud for the Garden State

While Princeton students have been burying their heads in their laptops and textbooks, oblivious to the outside world -- well, except for the occasional Facebook "study break" or "Whitman wail" -- the state of New Jersey has been making headlines. The New Jersey Legislature passed a measure to legalize medical marijuana. And the bill was co-sponsored by Princeton's very own Assemblyman, Reed Gusciora. Now Governor Jon Corzine just needs to sign the bill before he leaves office next week.But lest any students think that New Jersey will become the next California... The law will only legalize marijuana use for patients with severe illnesses such as cancer, AIDS and multiple sclerosis. Thirteen other states have already legalized medical marijuana and New Jersey's law will be the most restrictive in the country. Nick Scutari, the bill's other co-sponsor, said "we have learned from the mistakes of other states."Still, big news nonetheless. As for how this law will affect life at Princeton -- only time will tell. Who knows? Maybe science library donor -- and major legalization activist -- Peter Lewis '55 will help us build our first on-campus supply store. Then everyone would want to get McCosh'd.
