Class of 2010 president Aditya Panda announced this afternoon that Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos '86 will deliver the Baccalaureate address this spring. The ceremony will take place Sunday, May 30, 2010, in the University Chapel. The last two speakers have been Gen. David Petraeus GS '85 in 2009 and famed Harvard physician/anthropologist Paul Farmer in 2008.No word yet whether Bezos will come bearing Kindles as gifts for the graduating class. So what's the verdict out there? Good choice? Or a lazy one?Panda's full email after the jump:
Dear Classmates,In this university of traditions, few are cherished more than the Baccalaureate address, which began with Class of 1760. So, it is with pleasure and excitement that I wish to inform you that Jeff Bezos '86 has accepted the University's invitation to address our class at this year's Baccalaureate ceremony. One of the great pioneers in the Princeton family, Bezos most notably made his mark in 1994 when he founded Amazon.com. Today a well known part of the web landscape, Amazon revolutionized commerce and the way people used the Internet. Yet what I personally consider most remarkable about Bezos is that he didn't stop. In recent years, he's led Amazon's forays into cloud computing and the creation of the Kindle (the success of which might "put him in the same ranks as Johannes Gutenberg", Bill Gates noted). Nor are his ambitions limited to e-commerce (or Earth): Bezos also founded Blue Origin, which aspires to make commercial space travel possible early next decade.During our time together at Princeton, we've witnessed so much change in American business, technology, and politics. So as we prepare to take our first steps into the uncertainty outside FitzRandolph Gate, it's hard to imagine a guide better than an entrepreneur best known for his own "first steps". That's why I'm excited to have Jeff Bezos as our Baccalaureate speaker, and I hope you are too.Yours,Aditya
